Air Conditioning Motors

NOTE: this section is for informational purposes only, attempting to replace any electrical part should be done only by a certified electrician, please remember to practice safety measures at all times.

DANGER :Always disconnect power to the unit before attempting to service it.
Attempt this at your own risk !!!

1. How to identify the fan motor required?

Condenser Fan Motor (Typically cooling the compressor side)

Things you need to know...........

- Horsepower "HP"
- Speed "RPM"
- Voltage "V"
- Rotation, either "CW" or "CCW"
Note on rotation: some motors out there are reversible and will rotate in either direction.
Also important: make sure to specify which end is being viewed when determining rotation,
from the shaft end, or opposite shaft end. (It makes a difference)
- Motor frame size, 42 or 48 frame.
Typically frame sizes can be determined by measuring the outside diameter of the fan motor
Most common....
Frame 42 = 5" O.D.
Frame 48 = 5-5/8" O.D.
-Shaft size, this is usually 1/2" in diameter

- Mounting Method (How is the motor attached to the unit)

Stud Mount (4 Studs sticking out the back of the motor)

Belly Band (Band wrapped around the body of the motor)

Rheem/Rhud Style Mount (4 Tapped holes on the bottom/sides of the motor)

There is other mounting configurations, not shown.
The ones shown above are the most common ones.

Evaporator Fan Motor (Air Handler, blowing the cold air)

Things you need to know...........

- Horsepower "HP"
- Speed "RPM"
- Voltage "V"
- Rotation, either "CW" or "CCW"
Note on rotation: some motors out there are reversible and will rotate in either direction.
Also important: make sure to specify which end is being viewed when determining rotation,

- Mounting Method (How is the motor attached to the unit)

Belly Band (Band wrapped around the body of the motor)

Torsion Flex Mount (3 welded ears on the motor body)

Resilient Ring Mount (Rubber Rings at both ends of motor are clamped by the bracket)
if this is what you have, knowing the length of the motor's body
is very important !
